Full Staff for Full Respect: A Resolution on Flag Display Integrity

Whereas, the Flag of the United States represents the unity, strength, and freedom of our nation and its people;

Whereas, the tradition of setting the flag at half-staff is intended as a sign of mourning or respect, it is perceived as a gesture that may not fully align with the uplifting spirit and the respect due to the flag as outlined in the US Flag Code;

Whereas, expressions of mourning and remembrance can be effectively conveyed through alternative means without altering the flag’s position, such as utilizing unflown flags for ceremonial purposes, or by wearing mourning bands or black clothing as signs of respect;

Whereas, the attachment of an All-Weather Flag permanently at the top of the staff ensures the flag’s dignified display under all conditions, thereby honoring the flag and its symbolism at all times;

Be it resolved that:

  1. Commitment to Full Staff: I shall maintain the Flag of the United States at Full Staff on all occasions to symbolize my unwavering respect for the flag and what it represents to our nation and its people.
  2. Alternative Memorial Practices: I acknowledge and support the use of alternative methods for expressing mourning and respect that do not involve altering the flag’s position. These methods include but are not limited to the use of unflown flags for significant ceremonial purposes, the adoption of mourning bands, or the display of black flags in a subordinate position to the US Flag.
  3. Flag Maintenance and Display: To ensure the flag’s honorable display, I commit to attaching an All-Weather Flag permanently at the top of the staff. The flag shall be replaced only when necessary, preferably in a dignified ceremony on Memorial Day before noon, to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our country.
  4. Responsible Flag Disposal: I advocate for the responsible disposal of Polyester and Nylon flags through shredding and recycling, rather than burning, aligning with environmentally responsible practices.
  5. Valuing Dignity over Condition: I assert that a well-worn but respectfully flown flag is preferable to a flag that may be new but displayed in a manner that does not convey full dignity. Let the half-staff position be reserved exclusively for the Flag of Truce.
I far prefer this tattered but proud flag flying high, over a beautiful flag flown only half way up. (Let’s replace this one though.)

Be it further resolved that, through this resolution, I affirm my dedication to the principles of respect, unity, and patriotism that are embodied by the Flag of the United States. I commit to upholding these values in our community and encourage others to do the same, fostering a spirit of pride and reverence for our nation.

Resolved by Michael Vera on the fourteenth of March, two thousand twenty four.
